Learners will have had many experiences in settling into, setting up and changing around living, working and playing spaces in their personal and school lives. As a result they will have lots of ideas and information that can be drawn on when thinking about how to set up and negotiate shared spaces.

The thinking routines will help learners activate their prior knowledge and experience and see it as useful and important knowledge that they can used when planning or negotiating a new shared space.

It is important that both the learners and the teachers see learning spaces as more than a traditional classroom. These are public spaces that serve a variety of purposes and sometimes even a variety of communities.
