‘BEYOND THE BOOK’  READING STRATEGIES – Evaluative Reading Strategies

Readers take on the role of critic and analyst. Readers are invited to explore the wider connections to the world, perspectives, experiences, texts, authors, illustrators, and readers have with one another. The reading strategies invite readers to

• Begin to explore factors that influence how a text is developed or comprehended
• Use background or prior knowledge about the world to “read between the lines” and pull out meaning
• Analyse and develop responses based on and about the author’s language, values, imagery, style and purpose and the influence of illustrative style and techniques.
• Evaluate what they do understand and recognize what they don’t understand, participate in discussions about absent but implicit ideas
